It started out as an innocent post on the CANSCAIP listserv. Someone had noticed that the membership list of the Alien Disclosure Group, looked very similar to a large portion of the CANSCAIP membership.
It seems that many of Canada’s top kids writers were abducted into the ranks of the ADG without even knowing it. Some had actually gained post-graduated degrees, since the letters “Phd” and “MD” followed their names. Lucky them! Alas, I was not one of the chosen few, but I was happy to watch the whole supernatural tale from under the safety of my tinfoil hat.
After consulting with legal consul, our intrepid CANSCAIP rep fired off a polite but firm email requesting that the members’ names be removed or the ADG would receive a call from our lawyers. This was answered with a not-so polite and not-so firm message from the ADG president/leader? He insisted that his list was accurate, but would check out the situation, not before threatening CANSCAIP with legal action of his own. (Oh how quickly the lawsuits can fly!)
To the ADG’s credit, they immediately brought down their members page and within days, the list was amended and this message was pasted on the site’s main page:
It has been brought to our attention that certain names that appear on our members list may have been fabricated. We wish to assure all our genuine members and our supporters that this matter will be thoroughly investigated, and the appropriate action will be taken. Over the last year or so the group has been infiltrated by certain individuals who wish to harm, and discredit our cause. These attacks have intensified since the Contact Day Documentry was planned last year, and have been relentless over these last few months. Our director and his family have been threatened and intimidated by these cowards, and our website has been infiltrated and interfered with. Anyone reading this message who is involved in these dispicable [sic] acts of saboutage [sic] please be advised, you will be exposed for what you are, and you will be prosecuted. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvinience [sic] caused.
Edward
So, that would be the end of it right? Not when the Q&Q is on the case. Acting on anonymous tip, they blogged the whole story on Thursday and it’s since . . . well, fizzled out, really. But I still think it’s cool that I was there watching the whole thing unfold before me.
And to top it all off – no one got probed!!
“No one go probed!” Hilarious!
What a bizarre story. And I’m so bummed I wasn’t on the list! But I did just join…maybe over time I could get an honorary alien degree? But no probin’ thanks!
Oh, and yes, speaking of CANSCAIP, Liam, I’m definitely going to this week’s meeting. I’m in Burlington house-sitting for a few days, and don’t have access to email, but will be back Wednesday morning. I’ll drop you an email as soon as I can on Wednesday and see if we can maybe meet at the Runnymede station and travel together if you’re going.
Yeah, I was hurt by not being abducted either. Oh well, maybe next time the aliens visit.
CANSCAIP meeting for Wednesday sounds good, too. I’m bringing my camera just in case we get any extraterrestrial visitors!
