Heading North to Nunavut

Okay, I’ve been really bad about talking about this one, but it definitely won’t take away how cool it is: I’m going to Nunuavut as part of Canadian Children’s Book Week! I’ve known for ages and been meaning to post about it, but life around here has been pretty busy, to say the least. But back to Book Week – from November 17th until the 24th, I’ll be north of Hudson Bay visiting schools and libraries in many communities across Nunavut. If you’re in the area, I’ve put up the wheres and whens over on my main page.

Thanks to Ron at the Nunavut Public Library for organizing my visits and for the whole gang at the Canadian Children’s Book Centre for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime. I’m unbelievably excited to be heading north to meet some new comic fans. I will keep you posted, I promise.

Gaming for education, but for who?

I’m always excited when the latest edition of Futurelab’s newsletter lands in my inbox, and this week’s is no exception. Lots of good stuff inside if you’re interested learning about the places technology can take education. Visit their site or subscribe to the newsletter for all the details.

For instance, check out this video outlining why Futurelab is interested in using video games for education.

I’m all for exploring the ways that tech can enhance learning and I’m even realistic enough to admit that private computer companies will probably need to be involved in these developments. But I am concerned at the lack of discussion around who has access to these technologies. Tech in education is fine, but we need to make sure that everyone, rich or poor, has the ability to enjoy the benefits. Right now, I’m not seeing that with the debate Futurelab is engaging. But I might not be looking hard enough. I hope that is the case.

But at least they’re talking about tech in education in the UK. I have yet to find any serious level of discussion happening in the Canadian education system. Again, I hope it’s just because I’m not looking hard enough. The search will continue . . .
