Frosty running fool

Although I haven’t really written about it, I have been keeping up with my running. I know. No one is more surprised than me. But despite my moaning and wailing before each run, I am getting a lot of satisfaction from getting outside and hitting the pavement. I’ve even achieved the goals I set for myself: building up to 10 and 1s and running a steady 20 minutes straight. Now, my new goal is to build my base up to be able to run 10 km.

I’m not part of a Running Room clinic and I don’t plans to participate in an ‘official’ 10 km run, but I am following the RR formula to success (thanks to my running gurus’ copy of the brilliantly titled – Running Room’s Book on Running.) The book has the schedule of each clinic laid out in easy-to-follow steps. The only thing that is missing is the motivation and camaraderie of having a group to run with. I’m not missing that, so for now I’ll continue to be the running hermit and run solo.

But if it continues to be this cold, I’m packing it in until spring! Sheesh! My face nearly froze off yesterday. I did manage to complete my steady 6 km run, but I was still chilly at the end of it, despite the exercise.

At the end of my run I had had enough – I was tired, cold and covered in sweat. I have no idea how the marathoners do it. And frankly, at this stage, I don’t want to know. They can have the other 30 odd km. I’ll take my chilly 6 and head inside.

[...] I took a break from running in January when I nearly froze my lungs during an ambitious 10 km run. I said it was the cold and the snow, but really I was happy to have the break. It’s been a slothful few months and now that nagging voice has returned to say: “Shouldn’t you be outside?” Also, my running guru, is applying some not-so-subtle pressure and hints each time I fire up the PC for another marathon gaming session. My in-game characters might be growing stronger and more fit, but I am only growing older. [...]
