Quill & Quire likes Max

The December issue of Quill and Quire features a very nice review of Max Finder Mystery Collected Casebook Volume 1. Here are some of the highlights:

Update: Read the whole Max Finder Mystery review online at quillandquire.com.

The storylines contain elements of pre-teen experience that readers can relate to: school fundraising, dances, sports, bullying and fitting in, while the characters reflect the diverse ethnic backgrounds of Canadian schoolchildren.

And:

“In addition to appealing to amateur sleuths, these graphic mysteries offer reluctant readers short, manageable reads within an inviting comic-book format.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself! Pick up (or check out in the library, as I usually do) the latest issue of Q&Q to read the rest of the review and a great article on fellow blogger Ami Mckay’s rapid rise to CanLit stardom (way to go Ami!)

Max Finder Mystery Collected Casebook Vol. 1 is available in bookstores across Canada and online everywhere and it makes a great holiday gift for the youth sleuth in your life.

Science of sparklers shines online

One of my recent articles from the 2006 summer issue of KNOW science magazine is now available online. For the next few months, you can read all about the science behind sparklers on their site in my article: Know It: Sparklers [pdf].

It is a short piece and it was a big challenge to fit so much sparkler science into just a few hundred words. But the editors at KNOW, and their sister magazine YES, are real pros and helped me get all that crackling info squished into a compact package, ready to pop into your brain. So, if you ever wanted to know what makes a sparkler spark, I suggest you check it out.

Writing update and Blogger woes

If it has gone silent around here, you know that means I am busy writing. But it has also gone silent on my main page and that is because Blogger has thrown me into its dungeon once again. Ugh. Not sure what button I pushed to break the Blogger blog running the main page, but thankfully Wordpress is working well.

So, until I escape the dark depths of Blogger imprisonment, here is what has been happening:

I’ve started work on the second book in my new graphic novel series for Orca Book Publishers, Graphic Guide Adventures. The manuscript for the first book, Wild Ride, is with illustrator Michael Deas and is coming along nicely. It’s due out Fall 2007.

I’ve also just finished going over the proofs for Max Finder Mystery Collected Casebook Volume 2, which is looking really good. It’s due out for Spring 2007 and will have ten more Max & Alison mysteries and a whole heap of new puzzles.

In the meantime, Owl Magazine is running a Max Finder Mystery contest this month. Pick up a copy of Owl and have the chance to win 1 of 25 copies of Max Finder Mystery Collected Casebook Vol. 1.

Now, if you’ll excuse me I have a Blogger engine to dismantle. With my luck, I’ll end up with a few spare parts by the time I’m done.
